Can You Leave Electric Gates Open?

Electric gates offer additional security for your home or business, allowing access for those with authorization but remaining closed at other times. This is all well and good, until you need to leave your electric gates open.

Suddenly the automatic gate closing feature becomes the most frustrating part about owning electric gates. The obvious question then becomes whether you can leave electric gates open, and if so, how?

Can You Leave Electric Gates Open?

By default pretty much all electric gates shut themselves soon after opening, assuming nothing is in the way.

Broadly speaking it is still possible to leave them open, though there are a number of ways to achieve this depending on the model you have installed.

It’s always best to consult the user manual. If, like me, you’re a devil for losing paper instruction manuals then doing a search online for the specific model you have can be a handy way to find an instruction manual.

However if you’d rather just try the available options then here are the most likely ways you can leave your electric gates open…

Turn Off Automatic Closure

Some electric gates allow you to turn the automatic closure feature on and off at will. This is typically done at the controller positioned near the gate, though may also feature on some remotes.

Of course, if you go down this route, be sure to re-activate the automatic closure feature once the situation requiring the gates to be permanently open has passed.

Open the Gates and Remove the Power Source

A slightly more manual and less refined option is to move your electric gates into the “open” position and then remove the power source. In this way the motors won’t be able to close your gates.

Depending on your individual setup this may entail covering the solar panel or disconnecting the power at the controller. In extreme circumstances, and assuming your electric gate has been isolated on your consumer unit, you could simply flick the fuse off.

Be aware, however, that removing power from your electric gates can have other unintended consequences. When re-powering the device some issues are possible as the system resets itself.

Ensure you have time on hand if it is necessary to program any features or resolve any minor issues when the power is re-established.

Switch To Manual Opening

Pretty much all electric gates can be manually opened or closed, to cover cases of power outage. After all, you wouldn’t want to be locked out of your home or business simply due to a temporary power cut.

For security, of course, it’s not just a matter of manually pushing or pulling the electric gate. Instead there is typically a locking mechanism on the motor or control unit of the electric gate. Typically it requires a key of some kind. The key is inserted and turned, essentially detaching the gate from its motor.

In this manner you could leave your electric gates open by firstly moving the gates to the open position, and secondly by inserting your key to deactivate the electric closing mechanism.

Install a Timer

If you want to leave your electric gates open on a regular basis then arguably the most effective option is to install a timer.

Timers are most commonly installed with commercial electric gates. For example, you may want an electric gate to remain open all day at a warehouse, so lorries can come and go at will, but then have the gate close as darkness falls and remain closed all night.

Timers are relatively cheap and , once installed by a professional, give a huge amount of extra flexibility for controlling your electric gate.

Drawbacks to Leaving Your Electric Gates Open

While we appreciate you’ve likely landed on this article specifically because you’ve decided you want to leave your electric gates open, before you go ahead it’s worth considering the potential drawbacks of this.

Reduced Property Security

Possibly the biggest reason you might not want to leave your electric gates open all day is the security issue. If anyone has access then there might be an increased risk of crime on your property.

Of course, some of this can be offset by installing suitable CCTV cameras to monitor the threshold to your property. But a closed gate is a very visible way to dissuade unwanted attention when a camera may not be so noticeable.

Hassle of Re-Activating the Automatic Closing Feature

Depending on how you lock your electric gates open, re-activating the automatic closing feature can be a pain. For example if you manually detach the gates from their motors then you’ll need to remember to reverse this if and when you no longer want the gates to remain open.

While this might only sound like a minor inconvenience imagine doing it in the dark, in the snow and so on. Just be mindful of this if you opt to leave your electric gates open.

Alternatives to Leaving Your Electric Gates Open

If you want to ensure easy access to your property, but the thought of leaving your electric gates open all day isn’t ideal, then there are some other options that might work in some situations.

These may offer the access levels you’re seeking but without the security risk of a gate remaining open for long periods of time.

Additional/Alternative Sensors

There are numerous ways that an electric gate can be triggered to open. For example, it is possible to install a sensor that opens the gate whenever it senses a vehicle or person is approaching. Once the trigger has gone (i.e. the car has passed through) then the gate closes again behind them. Combined with a timer, such a set-up can offer the best of both worlds – full access but only during set times.

Additional/Alternative Fobs

Depending on your reasons for wanting to leave your electric gates open, the simplest solution may simply be to purchase additional fobs or remotes and to give these to the individuals who need to access the property.

In this way, only select individuals can pass through the gate, but they can have access whenever you deem fit.

Intercom

One final alternative is to fit an intercom on the gatepost. Visitors arriving at the gate can use the intercom to draw attention to their presence, at which point you can open the electric gates for them if you so choose. Of course, this does mean that someone will need to be present to man the intercom, but all the same ensures greater security than leaving gates open all day.
